I have recently got into APNG file format for images. Sadly IE doesn't support APNG images. It will only show the first frame of the image. You might ask what is APNG? Well it is simply Animated PNG. Here is an animated PNG Smiley I recently added: So users of the latest and greatest browsers may see some nice APNG images/smileys springing up, one great advantage is they can be used on any background therefore easy on different themes. Regards, Ben.

Heard of it ever since I saw some animation of a red dinosaur eating paper of some sort (an APNG demonstration). Yay for the school computers running IE6!

From the article Ulrik posted: So, what’s wrong with GIFs? The two most apparent problems are that GIF images can only contain 256 colors, and lack support for partially-transparent pixels. This results in images which often look grainy or rough, and which do not smoothly blend into their background. A clever designer can somewhat mitigate these problems, but the tricks used don’t always work well in different situations — especially if the image is animated. Let’s look at an example of this problem… So that's what happened to this I made a while back: http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/5773/readingoutsidethelinesjj9.gif

Oh men! O_O You may don't believe it, but actually today, before connect to the Internet and see this announcement, I was thinking about to change the smileys we have, with smileys with TP's style! That would be awesome and so this smiley it's awesome! (Never heard about APNG. That's cool! Animated PNG files. PNG files are my favorite. )

apng :3 I have known that stuff for a while, though this reminded me. Although, I must say, that one smiley isn't really much. But I think that was just a test... am I right?

Why not using GIF anyway?
GIFs tend to lose a lot of colour (they can only store 255 of them), have no layer or alpha storage, and in general are a lot less smooth.
