I've been working for quite a while on this and my problem is I just can't get it right. I've tried so many different ways, I'm sure there are easier ways of accomplishing what I am trying to accomplish but here is what I have come up with:

DL: http://willhostforfood.com/?Action=download&fileid=40130

It's not really commented but there is only 3 objects and 1 script so it isn't exactly much to read through. I was just hoping that someone could help, help me make it better and develop it into an open source adbance wars style engine. At the moment I'm trying to get unit selection generating squares in the correct place. The ranges: 6 and 14 work correctly so far. My problem is getting ranges higher than that to work. Anyway, download it and open it and see what you think.

Edit:
Might help:

What is your scale for range values to number of squares out?

Hmm not entirely sure what you meant there.

The range is the number of squares generated. A range of 6 generates 2 squares in the center and 4 around the outside.

Oh, nvm then.  I understand now.  So it should potentially be possible to create a square with a range of 8 (not that it'd be used)?

EDIT: I mean range of 10

Yes. The basic idea is that each "range" would make the area in which the unit can move one size bigger. See first post for a reference picture.

Finished.  I wrote an entirely new script.
The range values are different now.  So instead of 6, 14, 22...it's 1, 2, 3...
